Friends
I just joined the list specifically to rehash this question. I know it
has been covered before, but this connection does work as simply for me
as previous posts suggest.
I have an older iMac, running OS 8.6, and an eMate 300 pretty much as
it came from the factory. When I switched from my previous Powermac, I
stopped synching, and haven't used the eMate much, but I thought I
would bring it out of retirement.
I have installed Newton Connection Utilties fresh on the iMac, and it
gave me the USB port as an option for connecting, and I selected it. I
connected the two devices with a Keyspan serial to USB cable, and
installed the software for that cable. I have Serial selected for the
Docking connection on the eMate.
When I open NCU, it looks right, but when I try to dock, I see it
"trying" on the eMate, nothing happens on the iMac, and then I get a
message on the eMate that the connection was stopped because there was
no response. I have tried all variations of restarting, unplugging and
replugging, etc.
Do I have a bad cable? I don't have any other serial devices to test
that on. Any other ideas? This is described several times on this list
as an easy if slow way to connect these computers. I will be delighted
to hear that I have made one simple and stupid mistake, but so far it
ain't easy for me.
