Thanks for the response, Marty. But, the problems occur during the
connection phase, either in getting a configuration from the DHCP
server (if I have it set up that way) or in resolving a server (mail or
web) IP address (if I have it set up manually). This is before any
mail is downloaded. I have no idea why it would make a difference
whether the connection was initiated by SimpleMail or NewtsCape because
it seems that the initial connection would be the same for both apps.

Does this clarify it? Anyone else had similar experiences?
