No, not by just using the batteries. they just won't
last as long as "AA" batteries will. For instance,
that 850 mAh battery is about a third of the capacity
you can get from modern "AA" NiHM batteries. I have
seen "AA" NiMH batteries with 2500mAh capacities, so
the weight is offset by the usage.
Be careful though with recharging them using the
Newt...I believe that the recharge cycle is based off
the temperature...I don't think that that resister
will give the Newton enough information to stop
charging...Personally? I wouldn't recharge them in the
newton at all...
