Same hear. Best wishes for lucky return, Ronnie!

Sonny, you thinking of Rich's brilliant This Ole Newt? It's gone (and
missed). I wonder if Rich will be holding his Newtie Awards again or
transfer the franchise to the World Newton Something or somebody else...
(Paging Rich, paging Ronnie... ;=} )
As a proxy for the misplaced Newtons page, maybe if there were a page
on the
Wiki (whenever the Wiki is back up again... Couldn't that also be
mirrored!?
It's more detailed and current that the dear old FAQ, and even THAT is
mirrored)... Linked off the home page, where people could leave details
of
any Newts gone AWOL and return details (maybe somebody could volunteer
to
work as clearing house for this, so anybody who'll return stuff is
guaranteed some anonymity and a reward...). As Newtons become more
scarce
and valuable (and expensive to replace), this sounds like a very good
and
obvious idea to me.
Could work like this: (1) A Newton goes AWOL. (2) The owner (a)
leaves
details on the Wiki incl. reward for returning the absentee and (b)
registers her claim with the Misplaced Newtons Centre. (3) The lucky
finder
sees this, or somebody finds an auction on eBay with matching
description,
and (4) can get in touch with the owner and/or seller to resolve this
via
the established third party clearing house, with any rewards and
shipping
handled through the clearing house.
While believing that this will work w/o fail is quite a long shot,
there
*is* a reason why camera clubs and other enthusiasts have such AWOL
listings
with serial numbers, etc., against which most repair centers and many
dealers will check offered items. I know Frank keeps a list of S/Ns...
And
with a more or less official Misplaced Newtons Centre for handling this
(hmh, maybe operated by Ronnie's org?) and promise of rewards 'stead of
prosecution...
This might help some. Ronnie, all--what do you think of this?
Good luck,
D.
P.S.: Neat trick you'll surely all know already--to encourage return of
my
Newton, I have the PIN security set to "every 24 h", so the Newt will
lock
out after a day max. and on turning on ALWAYS present above the PIN box
on
the start screen a "Reward for Return"-message with my phone number
(thanks,
Rhonda H. and LA Green for teaching me this!). Much recommended!
Want to know how to set this up? See

(I think I'd also put this up on the Wiki back then, but can't check,
as the
Wiki is 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable again... might be one
argument
against the AWOL list on the Wiki... or one argument pro mirroring the
Wiki...).
