I see at least one problem, which probably is THE problem.
As I already guessed, the spring is not correctly seated.
If you compare my image here

you will notice that the spring has moved the negative battery
contact much too far towards the inside of the battery compartment.
This is because the little part of the case that keeps the
contact where it belongs has broken off. To fix this, you will
have to replace the middle part of the case. If you can't get one
where you live, drop me a line privately, maybe we can work
something out.

Apart from that, the positive contact of the battery looks pretty
ugly. If you have access to a voltmeter, check that there is
actually a measurable voltage across the battery's positive and
negative contact.
