Hi,
i would want to leave some comments about the serial to usb adapter
published on the NewtSplit website:
http://homepage.mac.com/adriano.angelillis/PhotoAlbum5.html
I call it 'High Speed Serial Converter' cause this is the name
reported by NCU on the preferences window.
It is fully compatible with both OS8, OS9, OSX (all versions, Tiger
included), other than Windows from '98 through 'XP.
The High Speed Serial Converter, when compared to a Keyspan adapter,
results faster to install
and easier to manage, then permits file transfer at max speed of
230Kbps instead of the usual 38Kbps.
It can be used in both printer/modem mode, and after having installed
the driver, it's ready to use.
I have OSX9.2.2 and OSX 10.4.2 running on the same partition.
With OS9 drivers installed only, the serial adapter is amazingly
and stably available on NCU both when booting in OS9
and on OSX when in Classic environment too.
When installing the OSX drivers too, although available on every OSX app
which handles serial communications (i.e. ZTerm), the high speed
serial port
cannot be initialized by the Classic environment and NCU will report
error-78,
asking to choose another port.
In conclusion, although very reliable when booting on OSX and OS9
respectively,
the High Speed Serial Converter will work in Classic environment when
having installed
the drivers for on OS9 only.

Free BSD, Open BSD, QNX and Windows CE:

When booting on OS9 or when on Classic environment,
to have your Mac desktop/laptop communicating at 230400bps
it will have to be installed the Serial Enabler control panel:
http://www.markus-fritze.de/serialen/Serial-Enabler-1.0.3.sit
then to have your MessagePad communicating at 230400kbps
it will have to be installed the ser230400 extension:
http://www.ee.cityu.edu.hk/~clli/unixnpi/Ser230400.pkg.gz
Sorry for a so long post, and thanks in advance for your interest.
Kind regards,
Adriano Angelillis
