I'll check the version on my "G", I'm thinking it was v5 as well and I
flashed the bios too. I didn't have to force it to run "B: only I was able
to use it with my "G" devices as well. I have one other "B: device, it's a
HP 5850 WiFi printer running 802.11b, maybe this is my lucky charm. I've
replaced my "G" with a "GS version 4 and I don't have any problems with it
either. The one I have here at work, "GS" is a version 6, and I didn't flash
this one.

There are six hardware versions of the WRT54G, each one requiring
specific (and different) firmware revisions when upgrading. Mine is a WRT54G
V.5 (flashed to the latest firmware). I've tried just about every wireless,
QOS, and security settings - just to make sure. Whatever is going on, it's
pretty low level. G->B negotiation is not the culprit, as I've manually
forced it down to B.
