I have never been able to get my ISP, Knology, to accept any device
without them registering its MAC address, and they tell me that when
I call. I could change ISPs, but as long as I am with Knology, I
don't know any way around that.

I've never gone peer to peer either, but years ago I bought a
crossover cable to do just that. I may look for it tonight.
