Eric did a good job describing our meeting last Saturday and thanks
to him I'm using my Newton more than ever. I can't wait to get my
Pico Card and start using bluetooth.
Eric was kind enough to give me an extra Keyspan adapter so I can use
my Newton and I've been installing things ever since. The first thing
I did was install NewtSync and try to sync my MP with iCal and
Address Book on my iMac G5 running Tiger. My experience has been
mixed. I found that text syncing didn't work, address book syncing
worked great but iCal syncing left much to be desired. NewtSync had a
tendency to duplicate calendar entries on iCal and would not sync
multiple calendars simultaneously. It also got confused when it
encountered all day events. This is something that has me a little
worried since having my calendar and address book on both my MP and
iMac is a must. I fear that if I can't find a way to make this work,
my MP will just be another electronic device lying around at the
bottom of a drawer. I know how to program on PHP and have tried
looking at the source to see if I could help out but I felt a little
overwhelmed as I know next to nothing of AppleScript or OS X
development.
After visiting the MyDreamApp (http://www.mydreamapp.com) website I
had an idea and thought I'd ask the list for your input. I understand
that development for the Newton is done by the community and we can't
expect a company to take this on since there is no way of making any
money out of it. Wouldn't it be possible then, as this is an
essential piece of software if the MP's life is going to be
lengthened, for everyone in the community to give money to a
developer to solve this problem? Suppose there are 500 people in the
community that give $10 (maybe $20) dollars to a professional
developer. Wouldn't this be enough to entice him to write a fully
working and useful syncing software for OS X? We already have two
open source initiatives, maybe he could start working from those.
Hey, maybe some member of the list would be willing to do it !
This may be a naive suggestion, but I know I would gladly pay to have
my MP flawlessly sync to my iMac.
