It could work, depending on the current draw. USB can supply a half an amp,
Adriano should be able to tell you how much current his connectors can
supply (normal due diligence when producing electronic products). Then it
is a matter of determining the current draw of the modem and making sure it
is less than what the Newton can supply, this should be available from SFE
or SparkFun.
The RS-232 section is, of course, compatible.
