Just to add to the information base:
In the past, I have tried backing up my Newton using NCU to a Win2k rig.
Usually I get the error (-1) and assume nothing was achieved. Inspired by
the recent dialogue on connectivity between Windows using NCU I attempted
backing up once more. I was careful to follow the instructions from other
listers who talked about adjusting the COM1 settings and using multiple
instances of Slowdown.
After about 20 minutes, I got the error (-1) again. This time, however, I
tried looking in the \ncu\backup directory to see what happened. To my
surprise there was a back up file there which was 2.7 MB long. Which seems
about right at 38,400 bits per second and a 16 bit byte. I used this file
to successfully restore my Names data to a spare Newton.
So, I guess the lesson to be learnt is that the error (-1) message may not
mean that a backup or transfer of some sort necessarily failed.
Warm regards
Tony Kan
