I hate to be the only one responding to my own thread....but I figure
this goes into the archives and perhaps it will help someone with a
similar (or the same) problem in the future.

Anyway I did manage to get past this error (0). I froze every package
except hypernewt and then it worked fine making directories without any
error or problem. The funny thing is I then thawed all everything, the
problem did not return. So apparently once you get it making
directories it seems to keep working (so far so good). Perhaps it is
related to the initial problem I had when I installed.
