The Newton will not charge NiMH batteries in the standard battery
holder because it will think the cells are alkaline cells. You can't
change this behavior without modifying the battery cage, which isn't
for the faint at heart.
The purpose of Nick's SoftCharge is to make sure the Newton will
not discharge the NiMH batteries as much as alkalines can
be discharged. Or, to put it differently, to make sure that the
NiMH cell voltage does not fall below the minimum for this type of
cells. Alkalines can be discharged to a MUCH lower voltage.
