Sonny,

place something black behind the page you're scanning. Something like a
black piece of paper slightly bigger than the page size will work. At
work we use an blank x-ray chest film.

If you don't want to go out and buy black paper, you can make one by
using a photocopier machine. Just leave the cover open on the
photocoper with no paper on the scanner and make a photocopy, it'll
come out all matte black.
