As far as I know you cannot put icons on the back drop. I moved the
icons that I use most often to the button bar which significantly
reduces the number of times I need to access the extras drawer.
And for a little extra space I use an extension from Softwarebüro
Müeller called "Extras Layout" This will allow you to adjust Font,
Size and style as well as Icon and button spacing.
I could not find the english version on their current web page but

Avi's also keeps track of recently used applications and relaunches
them without going to the extras drawer.
