[NTLK] MP2000 Questions

I have recently (yesterday) acquired a MessagePad 2000, and I have two quick
questions.
1. I have looked through the MARC archive, and I still cannot figure out how
to use alkaline batteries in the newt without a battery cage. You can do
that, right? If so, how?

2. On my 2000 do I have 1 megabyte of memory to hold programs, notes, and
other files or 4 megabytes?
