Well in that case since it is less than intelligent life we are looking for, then our chances just got better.  :)
It's always occured to me that if we are looking for "life like us" we would need to meet them in space.
Otherwise if we meet them on Earth there are some obvious things to note, that they are...
1) more ambitious
2) more technically advanced
3) more together with their resources
4) more curious
And there is a chance that they would stop in, visit with us, but go away logging in their records "In a long exhaustive search of the universe we still show no signs of intelligent life."
Face it, if beings came and visited us, it would be like us visiting a caveman on their world.  Would *WE* really note them as intelligent?  I think we would be curious, but in the end we would still feel alone in the universe.
