No, Other USB to serial adapters are also workable as long as they
have suitable OSX drivers.

I think the IR thing is a weak link in this case. I think sticking
with a USB to serial adapter will simplify your problem a bit.

Please note, you will also need the Newton's special interconnect to
serial adapter, or a cable that goes from the interconnect port to
the serial adapter, or a internal Newton adapter (SER-001) that
brings out the serial port in a more normal form.
