Actually, this is/was one of the dirty secrets about the NewtonOS. I
read an article online several years ago--an interview with one of the
engineers on the Newton team. Basically, IIRC, he said that the Newton
OS, by the end, was so hacked and patched that it needed a _major_
overhaul. In other words, they had pushed the internals about as far
as it could go--think NIE. It was a disaster inside--worked great on
the outside, but it couldn't have taken another generation well. So,
the Newton team was looking at a complete rewrite of the system, on
top of everything else, with losing competition to the Palm... I
remember after reading this interview, being very deeply impressed
with the impression that maybe it was a mercy-killing of the Newton.
Doesn't sound pretty, and I certainly wish I still had the article,
but the copy I saved has been long lost through several hard drive
crashes in the intervening years. Maybe somebody remembers it, and
knows where it may still exist online...
