I'm all for moving away from the StuffIt! format at this point as it
really has no use in this day and age, but it has significant history
for Mac users. We'll have to be careful to preserve resource forks
where they exist if we try to migrate all packages away from it. Even
then, older Macs may not have the necessary tools to decode a zip
file containing resource forks, so .sit files still may have to
remain (although it's perfectly reasonable to have a .sit version as
well as a .zip version).

Really, if it's something that you want to be able to open on the
Newton, there's little reason to have it in any format other
than .pkg anyway (although .zip or .gzip might slightly improve
transfer speed, you'll lose that benefit when trying to decode it on
the Newton).
