Hello Charles,

as Sonny pointed out in a previous thread, you can find a serial
connector on eBay,
just take a quick search at the auction listed for item # 280116481129.

Such adapter is often referred to as the 'Dongle'. It will work on
MessagePad 2000/2100
and eMate. It's a somewhat rare item, so that some sellers tend to
threat Newton users like
little guys to who sell a such simple adapter at prices near the cost
of gold per oz.

The auction mentioned above has the adapter listed at a fair price I
think, including a fixed
and clearly mentioned shipping cost.

The 'Dongle' can be technically referred to as 'Interconnect to
Serial adapter' cause
the 'Interconnect Port' is the exact name for the multifunction slot
located on the upside
of MP2x00 series, and on eMate's leftside. In both cases it's located
near the DC jack.

Older generations of MessagePads, like MP100, 120, 130 have a more
standard type of serial port,
also called 'circular mini-din 8pin'. Any MessagePad (1x0, 2x00
series and eMate) will need
a 'Mac Printer Cable' to be connected to a desktop computer over a
serial connection.

In other words:

If you own a old Mac, using a 'Dongle' and a serial cable (the Mac
Printer one) you will be setup.

If you own a PC, you will need also a Mac to PC serial adapter.

If you own a new computer with USB ports and w/o any serial port, you
will need a usb-serial adapter,
plus dedicated drivers to be installed on the computer side (and not
on the Newton side).

If you want to get some more details, I can friendly recommend to
take a look at my website,
which you will find listed at the end of this message, and to where
eventually you would also find
every piece of hardware needed to estabilish that kind of
connectivity you would prefer.

There you will also find a Interconnect Serial Adapter which is much
less fat than the one listed on eBay,
and permits to stay on the safe side, cause it won't warn the so
delicate (and prone to detach) multifunction slot.

The (safest one) Interconnect Serial Adapter is available here:
http://notwen.com/labo/interconnect

The most useful website where to learn about how to have care of our
own beloved Newton is here:
http://pda-soft.de [ available in both english and deutsche languages ]

Kind regards,

Adriano Angelillis
