A good reader for an audio book is as important as a good actor in a movie. That's why the authors don't often perform the reading of their own books.

Back when I did the LiveJournal "50 book challenge" there was some
controversy over whether an audiobook should "count" toward the total
read in a year. At the time, my girlfriend and I would take turns
reading books aloud to one another. I say that if being read to by a
real human being is reading, then listening to a taped human being
should be too.

It's been a couple of years since I've listened to an audiobook, but
I think it's totally legitimate so long as the audiobook is not an
abridged version.

I give bonus points for audiobooks read by the authors. As I said, I
haven't listened to any in a while but it is a real treat. Except
when the author's voice is annoying.
