Follow the reset sequence outlined here

to the letter. Do not change anything. Even if you consider it
unimportant. Since you do not have the power adapter, skip the
steps that would require one.
Instead, make sure you are using really fresh alkalines. Not those
that you *think* are still fresh, but those that you bought a
minute ago. The fact that the page mentioned above is about a MP130
does not matter. It's the same with the OMP.
Of course, it wouldn't hurt to have a look at the battery contacts.
Old NiCd packs have a tendency to leak and corrode the contact springs
in the Newton's battery compartment.
