It gets better. Actually, it doesn't.
I did a "brainwipe" hard reset (after I backed up my 'works stuff). Then I
tried to install the EM737246.PKG update (eMate said it was already
installed however), installed the 601 memory fix, the .6 syspatch, then
Blunt 1.0 and Neo 1.0.3. Then inserted the Pico card, did a self-test, and
got a negative error code. So I restarted the eMate, did a self-test, and
the self-test passed. So I tapped [discover] and after 2 increments of the
therm bar, it froze and the red light came on the unit.
So I guess it's the Sphinx hardware.
Can anyone recommend another Bluetooth adpter they know works with Blunt?
I think there was one other BT stack for the Newt platform, can anyone
remember what that was?
Thanks.

Slight update. I grabbed Blunt 1.0 from SourcerForge and Neo 1.0.3. I
trashed all previous Blunt related stuff installed in the eMate. I installed
the new versions. I inserted my Pico card. I ran the Bluetooth setup
self-test. The test passed. I clicked "discover" and after 2 increments of
the thermometer bar, the red light on the Pico card came up and the eMate
froze. So I reset the eMate (even the backlight button was unresponsive) and
here I am.
Stuck.

I just have the Pico card in the eMate and the Azio Bluetooth USB thing in
my PC. That's it.
Working this a little bit more, I brought everything home. The Pico
self-tested fine again in the eMate. I deleted the previously-discovered
work PC. There were then no items, so I tapped [discover] and the progress
bar advances two clicks and then the light on the Pico goes red. BT on the
PC appears to be behaving normally.
Very weird. All thoughts appreciated. I think it's also time to re-search
the e'list archives.... Ugh.
Thanks.

What types of devices are they? That might make a difference. Headset, Cell
phone, Printer, MP3 player, Mouse, Etc. I don't know much about bluetooth
.. if something is already paired will it show up in a scan for available
devices? Might depend on the device?
