Actually linksys makes such devices
I have a wga11b which only does wep security, but the newer versions do wpa2. They are usually called "game adapters" but the newt works great.
I could even power my adapter with 4 AA batteries, but I had to make my own bettery tray for that.
Before I had an orinoco card, that's how I'd get online onn open networks.

You might also try some 802.11 precursors or
alternatives.
Proxim made some equipment that max'd out at around 2
Mpbs and for which there were Newton drivers. Plenty
fast enough for the MessagePad. Plus, you'd get
security through obscurity in spades.
There was even an article on the Newted Community
about it. Might even find some of the stuff around if
I dug deep enough.
