I'm going to chime in.  There was an article in Pen Computing Magazine regarding this, saying that there we a punchout on the side of the MP2000 in which a ribbon cable connected to a keyboard replacement screen lid was possible.
Also in one of the Official Apple Newton Development Newsletters, I believe it makes mention of this as well.  As to whether the motherboard itself had a connector, it is unknown to me. 

Take a look on the side of your Newton 2000 where the lid attaches, there is a punchout there.
