I've just bought one from eBay in the UK for GBP 12 incl P&P but it hasn't
arrived yet.

You have to be careful about whether it is locked to a particular telco. I'll
let you know how successful it is later.

GSM coverage in your area is a prerequisite. There is a GSM website that lists
all the telcos and countries where that cellular technology is available.
