Re: [NTLK] PDA Friendly Maps?

My... Aren't we ambitious!

Google and other map (quest) services can do a lot of nifty stuff these days. The Newton just can't keep up with these new web standards that services (like these) use. I'm barely able to do a Google search anymore, let alone something as sophisticated as requesting maps and directions.

So, the idea is not really practical, other than emailing it to your Newton ahead of time.

The Newton can do maps and GPS but access to real-time map data is not what you would call, quick and easy. It requires much preparation: converting the map images, special calculations pre-entered into the source, compiling the source into a data package, loading the package onto your Newton, verifying you've done everything correctly, starting over, etc... etc...

Have you thought about an iPhone 3G? They're blowing them out for $49 now.

Battery life: Can't answer that, never found the need to. As a side note, I can drain my NiMH in a quick 24 hours by leaving my GPS Map software "tracking" and my (no backlight) MP120 communcating (serially) with the GPS antenna... I've done that, accidentally.

Maybe you should think about an accelerated Newton, then it might be able to keep up with you ;-)

Best regards,
