Are you talking about the star in a box in the middle of the screen on the top, if you are that is a icon (lack for a better term) that shows up when you hide a running app. if there is no hidden running apps there is no star that i see (have AVI backdrop installed)even if you have multiple running apps that are not hidden the star dont show (some apps cant be hidden)

maybe someone else could step in and explain whats going on, i havent seen this happen on my newton.
