You do have a point, I'm keeping away from the iPod touch exactly for
this reason. I do not want to carry yet another device with me,
however at this point the iPhone is
out of reach without a contract. So even though in Greece it is sold
unlocked and without the obligation of a contract, buying it as a
device is not an option for the moment.
However I am sure that Apple sees the big picture whereas we can only
speculate on the motives they are tying the phones to particular
carriers.
