I'm afraid I'm going to second this vote of appreciation. One of my musical
interests is New World folk music, and whereas I've found it relatively easy
to find US folk music (thank you, Alan and John Lomax and contemporaries!),
Canadian folk music has been harder to know where to start. Of course I
knew of people like Gordon Lightfoot and some other moderns (and yes, I too
had a crush on Joni Mitchell when I was a teen), but I'm interested in
getting back into the music of the 150 years and more from which Lightfoot &
co arise.
This OT thread has kick-started my search. Interesting to see the weight
given to sea-chanties, but how about other veins of labourers, like the
navvies, miners and lumberjacks? Did they just adapt the sea-chanties or
did they begin creating their own music? Using the US history as a
paradigm, where slave music gave rise to blues which cross-fertilized with
white folk music, are there any signs of a similar mixing of influences, for
example, with the music of the First Nations, Métis or Inuit, influencing
Canadian folk music? Any examples?
Anyway, thanks again. I just love this group! :-)
Shalom.
Christian
