Another possibility is that Apple has decided to adopt the policy of building devices that it thinks its customers ought to have, rather than ones they actually want. :^)
Admittedly, that's not a difficult policy for a successful company to adopt. We'll see how the new iPhone does now that there are products like the Palm Pre (which allegedly set a sales record for a Sprint phone launch) that may/may not represent serious competition.
