Re: [NTLK] [OT] It's MS-DOS 6.22 day!

I disagree. Microsoft's obsession with market dominence -- call it an
irrational fear of competition -- has destroyed much of the creative
activity that ought to be happening around Windows. Instead, most of the
new ideas come from Apple. The rest come from the FOSS community.

I agree with your position that separation of hardware and software is a
good thing. The C language gave us platform independent system code, and
Unix gave us a platform independent OS. FreeBSD is one of the more
adaptable implementations of BSD Unix, and that is what you find when you
peel away the pretty Aqua UI of OS X. In case you hadn't heard, OS X is
built on top of FreeBSD.

It is not easy to set out to build a platform independent version of
something so radically new as the Newton OS. The developers were forced to
keep the hardware and software closely connected in order to achieve their
goals. There is no reason why the Newton OS could not have evolved to
become platform independent. Apple did show some interest in such an
arrangement; the early version at least was licensed to Sharp and Motorola
and I think they both released products.

The surest way to disassociate software from the success or failure of any
one hardware vendor is to make the software free. As in Open-Source.
