I am pretty sure this is an effect of the 2010 patch, rolling over
from 2008 to 2009.
Removing the patch can be tricky, and may not stop the looping chime
issue -
removing it may even be part of that problem!

This just happened to one of my eMates and it took an hour to finally
delete the dates soup entries with the two birthday alerts repeating
every couple of seconds.
I don't think that the 2010 fix was ever on this machine
