Yes, they do use AAA batteries, but...
Factor in no wifi, and a backlight once in a while + something else...
Batteries have increased in capacity significantly over the years. When the Newton came out batteries had much less capacity than they do now. I have rechargeable AAA Sanyo Eneloops in there right now, and the battery has not budged over the past 5 days. I don't think a backlight would be a problem for these things power wise, which is another reason why I am pursuing it.
