The digitizer and display are easily separated.  But the digitizer  
also has a glass layer and this is likely broken alone or in addition  
to the display.
Have a look at this link to Frank's site then go back to hardware and  
look at backlight replacement.

The display unit has three easily separable parts the digitizer,  
display and backlight.  The difficulty is the need for complete  
disassembly to access them.
With low prices these days for MP 2000s, I would buy one and  
transplant my logic board to it.
