Phil,
I think you are basically right in your analysis as long as nothing
changes but at one point we need to move on from a computing paradigm
that has remained pretty much static for 25 years and, whatever I may
think about Apple at the moment, they are the most likely to break
free from it.
The UI of the Mac (and Windows) has stagnated to become more of a
limit on what is possible than an enabler. I cannot believe, and it is
not believable, that the laptop I am currently staring at is the final
solution, the apex of what computing can be; it has too many flaws.
Application centricity, data islands, single points of contact and
lists of commands cannot remain the defining factor of the computing
experience. A lot of what I like about the Newton is that it tries to
shake free of these restraints.
A tablet needs new UI thinking that makes the old way look like what
it is - old.
