Yes, I set the color to 16 shades of gray and saved it as a bitmap once I sized it.  It worked fine.  I use a picture of my wife as my backdrop.

Has anyone successfully generated an ebook with Newton Press in Windows
that can be used as an image in Avi's backdrop? I tried using the TIFF
format as described in the apple support document for Newton Press, but
I get a "Unable to import the file. Possible memory or translation
error" error. What image format does the windows version of Newton Press
expect?
