I can second Chris's suggestion.

I had trouble with NCX at first, but it turned out to be a flaky  
Keyspan adapter.  Once I replaced it, NCX has behaved well with  
several Newtons, under both Leopard and Snow Leopard, with both 19-HS  
and USA-28 Keyspan adapters, as well as an oddball D-Link dongle.
