Part of the answer is related to how much storage space you have. I
use two 24MB Linear Flash cards for dowloading and a 2GB ATA card for
archiving. I haven't ran into any real limitations concerning the
InOut box, per se.

POP3 (Mail V) is my connection method. IMAP (SimpleMail or Mail V) is
much faster and more efficient.

However, if you try to download or open a message greater than, oh I'd
say, 120KB, you can cause Mail V (and maybe SimpleMail) to slow down,
pause, choke, timeout or just plain give up.

Next, if your InOut storage card has less than 1MB free, Mail V (POP3)
will store the larger message (data) much more slowly. This is due to
fragmentation of the storage card. This slow down will eventually
cause Mail V to timeout (with your mail servers) and generate errors/
problems, when downloading these bigger email messages.

This is especially true with the eMate. Messages on an eMate can only
be retrieved to the internal store. This is because you have a
communications card in your only PCMCIA expansion slot.

A Newton will work very well with smaller, plain text, emails. Any
emails bigger than 25K probably doesn't need to be on your Newton,
anyway. I usually get to about 12MB of data in my InOut box, by the
time I start cleaning it out or switching to my second 24MB Linear card.
