Being a software developer and artist I also have mixed feelings on these
ideas.
All it comes down to is one simple rule, if I created it, it is my
intellectual property. Therefore it is my decision when and if I choose, to
release it to the public domain for fair use. Until that happens you run the
risk of legal action regardless of perceived abandonment.
I too understand the frustration of requiring/wanting a valuable piece of
software, only to find that registration will be almost impossible. Sending
countless emails, and tracking down phone numbers and addresses for
contacting the developer only to find that they are no longer around. It is
a damn shame that some of this irreplaceable software will remain backed up
on UNNA, even though it can never be used do to lack of proper registration.
