My apologies; exactly right. The DCMA criminalizes any attempt to circumvent DRM, Digital Rights Management, regardless of whether you're doing it to avoid paying for music, making a fair-use copy of a CD you bought from the store, or trying to keep an abandoned piece of software going so you can get at your family photos taken in an obscure format (ask any Apple QuickTake owner about that last one).
