I have a suggestion. Instead of all the hypothesising why don't we test
out an example?
There seems to be some agreement (but not all) that hacking a package or
sharing an access code for a package might be arguable where it is:
a) no longer available to purchase AND
b) is no longer supported AND
c) the authors are no longer contactable AND
d) it sits unused and basically dead to everyone AND
e) an access code or hack actually exists (otherwise there is no
argument anyway) AND
e) in reality, it's unblocking and use by Newton enthusiasts would cause
no material harm to anyone - as far as could reasonable be told, AND
f) the said enthusiasts would not profit in a material way from making
the package available to others
If you don't agree with these as the beginnings of a Code of Conduct,
please bear with the discussion and see how it goes.
Firstly though, can anyone identify a package that they would like to
use or try that meets all of the above criteria?
Once we have a package in mind and are satisfied that the criteria are
met we can discuss:
1) what reassurances or commitments the community could put forward to
maintain the criteria being met and
2) what commitments we could give if the author/s were to reappear -
i.e. a put back strategy.
Then we might be able to sign up to the resurrection of the package, but
we'll see.
All the best
Andy
