True.

However, what happens is that most email clients (and the Mailman list  
server software) use the 'In-Reply-To' header to construct a  
chronological 'thread' the conversation. When someone replies to an  
existing message - even if they change the subject line - the reply is  
automatically associated with the original message (and consequently,  
becomes part of that message thread).

This is also known as 'thread-whacking'.
