I suspect that the main obstacle with a roll-you-own-Newt isn't the technical
issues but the legal ones.  Most of the unique gestures and design elements of
the Newton UI are subject to copyright or patent or both.  For example, the
designing Notes as an endless roll of paper and carving off lengths of it to
create new Notes is subject to patent protection.

What would it take to grab something like the Android source as a base, then
adapting a Newton-style UI and data sharing model to it?  Would that be a
better option, a roll-your-own Newt?
