I thought of "tethered," too, but, somehow, that doesn't seem to denote the 
concept at which I am trying to get.  I'm afraid I may have hopelessly confused 
things (I seem to do that a lot) by asking for a single word. (Sorry.)

If, in a fit of madness, Grant were to take a pair of wire cutters to the 
"tether," would the stylus continue to work on the prototype?
