Sorry to hear about you loss.  I had a 130 and an eMate stolen from my car some years ago and like you I suspect that it ended up in a dumpster.

I seem to recall that the destination card needs to have the same name as the original.

My first Newton was a 2000.  I had difficulty with heap because I had a lot of packages installed.  This resulted in system crashes when I attempted to switch from icon view to list view in the extras drawer.  You can avoid this problem by freezing packages that you aren't  using.
I seem to recall that the 2000 has been reported as more stable than the 2100, IIRC it doesn't manifest the 6100 error.
