Only moisten your cloth; don't make your cloth so wet that there is a chance that fluid leaks between the cracks to enter the unit.

There's a rubbery coating on the outside that the solvents in the cleaner you used partly dissolved.
Plain water is best to clean with; if necessary, just a trace of mild soap in the water shouldn’t harm as long as not left in contact long.
Perhaps other list members know if there is any way to repair or restore the damage to the coating.
