My couple words about it:

Newton is not a failure. Newton just was created in wrong times. Too early. Why?

Market wasn’t ready for that kind of device. People were accustomed to large machines. They had no need for mobile communications. Only a few appreciated what gave Newton.
Price also was very important. Only few could afford to buy Newton. Next, communication capabilities. Even now Newton without WiFi/LAN card is nothing. And, if I remember correctly, first commercial WiFi card show up about 1997 - when Steve Jobs start killing Newton. And after years the iPad show up. Faster ISPs, WiFi everywhere. It was good environment for PDAs. But then wasn’t PDAs any more - only TABLETS ;)

Best regards,
Pawel Piotrowski
