You’re correct about the SER-001 board. I have one in my 2100 and the back case is cracked. I’m not sure if it was due to the connector for the internal port plus PCB thickness being too tall or the through hole pins of the Mini-Din connector putting pressure on the case. Either way it was a common problem with the boards, but it did resolve the issue of not having a dongle.
